Clean up of Wheeler Camp set for completion as homeless transition to Franz Anderson tiny homes

Posted

Homeless Prevention and Affordable Housing Coordinator Keylee Marineau reported that the Sleater Kinney Camp has been cleared and hardened already by the Washington State Department of Transportation.

“They [Department of Transportation], cleared the brush and put big rocks in it to make it uninhabitable in the future,” stated Marineau during the county’s Agenda Setting meeting Tuesday, September 19.

The Wheeler Camp is next on the plan to be cleaned up, as the homeless individuals will be relocated to Franz Anderson tiny homes.

District 2 Commissioner Gary Edwards asked about the garbage that was left behind when all the homeless were moved out, specifically around the Courthouse near Capitol Lake, since he considers the mess left behind to be an “eyesore."

“Jason Ashe, our Facilities Manager had already checked and said that everything on our own property had been cleaned, and the parts that do not belong to the city of Olympia,” said Budget Manager Robin Campbell.

The Commissioners asked to continue the conversation with the City of Olympia to confirm which jurisdiction is responsible for cleaning the area around the courthouse.

It doesn't matter what jurisdiction it's in or who cleans it up. You, all as a state government decided to become a sanctuary state and harbor this ****. Granted the taxpayers pay for your lopsided decisions so fix it.

It’s good to see some positive action on this very difficult issue. Thanks for the article.

When I lived in Southern California and landowners didn’t maintain their exterior property, the local jurisdiction could come in, clean it up, then add the cost to the landowner’s property tax bill.

Ha! The city did not move them all to structured housing. There is simply a new camp at the bottom of Henderson between the round-about and the freeway overpass. I guess the city hasn’t noticed the pile of trash growing there?
