College Street NE improvements may extend into summer 2026

Posted

College Street NE turned into a work zone on Monday, Feb. 24, as heavy construction took over.

The major rebuild is forcing detours and temporary access restrictions while upgrades moved forward.

The City of Lacey has awarded the contract for the work to Active Construction Inc. of Tacoma, which will install sewer and water mains, storm drain pipes, as well as repave roadways once underground work is complete.

The project covers College Street NE from Martin Way E to 15th Avenue NE and extends to 6th Avenue NE from Sleater Kinney Road NE to College Street NE.

The city confirmed the construction is expected to last more than a year, with paving in front of schools limited to breaks in the academic calendar.

According to the city government, if delays occur, road surfacing could stretch into summer 2026.

Crews will dig trenches to install new sewer and water mains, replacing aging infrastructure. Storm drains will be added to improve runoff management.

College Street NE between 8th Avenue NE and 15th Avenue NE will receive a new paved surface, while other roadways will be resurfaced after public utility work concludes.

The city stated that residents will be able to reach their homes, but periodic blockages are inevitable as work advances.

However, as work progresses, lane reductions, reroutes and moving work zones will clog the area. The noise from construction and dust from digging will be unavoidable.
