Convicted felon arrested after assaulting deputy at car crash scene in Lacey

A convicted felon was taken into custody following an altercation with law enforcement at the scene of a vehicle collision in Lacey.

The incident happened at approximately 4:52 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 15, when a deputy responded to Highway 510 and Old Pacific Highway for a head-on crash involving two vehicles, according to a social media post from Thurston County Sheriff Derek Sanders.

One of the drivers, identified as 47-year-old Bryan McKay Fleming, appeared intoxicated and became combative while the responding deputy attempted to deal with the situation.

The suspect, described as standing 6 feet, 2 inches tall, and weighing 210 pounds, initially ignored verbal commands and began moving back toward his vehicle, where he appeared to reach for something inside.

The suspect then charged toward the victim's vehicle, but the deputy quickly went between the suspect and the victim, and then tackled the suspect, said Sanders, who also said the man was a convicted felon.

The deputy then deployed a taser, but the suspect continued resisting and engaged in a physical struggle.

During the altercation, the suspect allegedly tried to take the deputy's service weapon.

“The fight went to the ground, at which point the suspect actively attempted to remove the deputy’s gun from her holster. The deputy stayed in the fight for two minutes until an off duty corrections officer with a concealed pistol license intervened, striking the suspect multiple times in the face with their gun,” Sanders said.

Another deputy arrived and assisted in restraining the suspect, using a second taser before he was finally restrained.

The deputy involved suffered injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. The suspect and the victim injured in the crash were also hospitalized. The victim is a school resource officer.

Once medically cleared, the suspect faces multiple charges, including third-degree assault on a law enforcement officer, driving under the influence, reckless driving, disarming law enforcement or corrections officer, obstructing a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest.

Thankfully the off duty corrections officer got there and helped fight Fleming; otherwise I don't want to think of what could have happened to the brave deputy.

The drunk who caused the crash, a convicted felony, showed himself once again to be a menace to society. Bail should be sky-high as the full book is thrown.
