Cordon of Honor for Lacey Fire District 3 firefighter Jake Johnson

Firefighters and first responders from agencies throughout Western Washington participated in a Cordon of Honor for Lacey Fire District 3 firefighter Jake Johnson.

The escort transported Johnson from Harborview Medical Center in Seattle to a funeral home in Tumwater on Thursday, July 30. Johnson, 29, died from injuries suffered in an off-duty fall on July 19.

A Cordon of Honor is a fire service tribute for a fallen member, in which agencies take part to honor the firefighter's service and stand with the family and fellow firefighters during a time of mourning.

Lacey Professional Firefighters IAFF Local 2903 shared video of the procession on Saturday, Aug. 1, and thanked the fire agencies and union locals that participated.

"We are incredibly grateful to the agencies and union locals along the I-5 (Interstate 5) corridor and throughout Western Washington, from Seattle to Tumwater, that came together to support Jake, his family, and our fire service family during this difficult time," the union said.

"The first responder community is unlike any other. We show up for one another when it matters most, and the overwhelming support we received was a powerful testament to that bond."

The union also thanked Olympia Firefighters Local 468, Tumwater Firefighters Local 2409, and the medical teams at Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia and Harborview Medical Center for caring for Johnson following the accident.

Johnson joined Local 2903 after previously serving with Mountain View Firefighters Local 3186. In announcing his death, the union said he quickly became "a trusted teammate, a friend, and an important part of our family."

Local 2903 said memorial service details will be shared when they become available and asked the public to respect the privacy of Johnson’s family, friends and fellow firefighters as they grieve his death.
