In a formal resolution adopted on September 17, the Board of Thurston County Commissioners proclaimed September 15th through October 15th as Hispanic and Latino Heritage Month.
This annual celebration honors the Hispanic and Latino community, recognizing its numerous achievements and societal contributions.
The proclamation highlighted that "National Hispanic and Latino Heritage Month celebrates the Hispanic and Latino community and highlights its countless achievements."
It acknowledged the diverse origins of many Latino Americans, who trace their heritage to "the cultures of the indigenous people of the Americas, to the Spanish explorers, or those brought as slaves to the New World."
The month-long observance, with the theme "Pioneers of Change: Shaping the Future Together," honors how Hispanic and Latino individuals contribute to collective goals and foster a more inclusive society.
Residents are invited to attend local celebrations, including the Salmon Celebration and Latinx Community Day, hosted by the Thurston County Stream Team, Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, and others.
This event will be on Saturday, September 21, from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Brewery Park at Tumwater Falls.
Additionally, Ultimano Comms and the City of Olympia are organizing the Lula Fest, which will take place on Saturday, September 28, from 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Isthmus Park in Olympia.
The proclamation emphasized the importance of Hispanic and Latino Americans in Thurston County, noting that they are a "significant and fast-growing demographic" whose presence enriches the community.
The board urged all residents to celebrate the substantial contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans during this designated month.
