Thurston County and Olympia made separate proclamations celebrating Monday, January 15 as Martin Luther King Day in commemorating the slain civil rights activist pivotal in racial reforms in the United States.

“We need to stand for democracy”

The Olympia City Council proclaimed January 15, 2024 as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day in Olympia to pay tribute to the life and works of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The council urges the community to participate in acts of service to the community to honor Dr. King and his principles of peace, equality, and service.

At the city council meeting on January 9, Mayor Dontae Payne presented the proclamation to Bishop Charlotte Beeler-Petty of Risen Faith Fellowship.

In her remarks, Bishop Beeler-Petty shared that she had met Dr. King while working in a cafeteria as a student. “All of us need to keep in mind what he proclaimed and what he lived. We need to stand for democracy for freedom. If we treated people like we want to be treated, this world wouldn't be a beautiful place to live."

The proclamation recognized Rev. Dr. King’s dedication to “non-violent advocacy for human rights for all people and advanced the values of equality, justice and opportunity for all.”

“Dr. King’s words and vision resonate today as they did in his lifetime, and it is incumbent upon us all to carry forward his principles of peace, equality, and service,” stated the proclamation.

The Board of County Commissioners (BoCC) proclaimed January 15 as Martin Luther King Jr. Day in Thurston County at a meeting last Tuesday, January 9.

Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., a civil rights advocate who fought for equality, social justice, and human rights, was born on the same date of the proclamation – January 15, 1929.

Reverend David L. Reeves, lead pastor at the Lacey New Life Baptist Church, received this year’s proclamation alongside the City of Lacey Commission on Equity Commissioner Dr. Thelma Jackson.

“It's always a privilege to be here this time of year. We recognize the Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King is someone who provided the kind of intangible contributions to our nation and certainly set an example for our world to follow,” said Reaves.

“We're grateful that Thurston County continues to acknowledge the work of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and we are hopeful that we'll continue on in acknowledgment of his work but also continuing on in doing the work,” Reaves added.

The county and the cities of Olympia, Lacey, and Tumwater, will come together on Monday, January 15, to celebrate the event “Honoring the Legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.”

Jackson emphasized that the proclamation shows the county’s support in a time when people are challenged with issues of trying to protect democracy, and fighting for voting, civil, and human rights in this county.

“This acknowledgment of Dr. King's holiday reminds us of his life and his legacy and what he stood for and what he worked for. With this proclamation that we'll share with the rest of our community, we acknowledge the county’s support of the kind of values and the kind of life Dr. King lived in hopes that we can live up to the standards and the challenges that he placed before us,” said Jackson.

The proclamation stated that the BoCC recognizes the work and efforts of Dr. King are not done, and public servants must reaffirm in every generation the lessons of justice, equity, and nourishment of every individual’s dignity and self-respect.

A 1964 Nobel Peace Prize recipient, Dr. King called poverty an “evil which plagues the modern world.”

The federal government recognized Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day as a national holiday in law on November 2, 1983.

MLK activism began with Emmett Till

    Dear Society,

Innocent women are being targeted and harassed in their homes by misogynist hate groups in the community, that operate as collective criminals above the law. 2024 and the white supremacist impunity of long ago, still goes on.

Young Emmett Till was heard crying out for his mama to save him. As he was sodomized with a shovel handle, his ***** cut off and put in his mouth, one ear was cut off, head bashed open with ax, his teeth pulled with pliers, his eyes dug out and his tongue cut. He was hung to a beam by his wrists and flogged with a whip (his back and buttocks bear this out), and his head was split open with an ax or hatchet. Till was then hot in the head, A 70 lb fan tied to his neck and thrown in the river. His murderers and false accusers were all acquitted. This is the SYSTEMIC evil that permeates our society and all life in earth, if these criminal cults are not stopped. No Justice no Peace. No utopia while good people suffer alone behind closed doors, at the hand of demonic beast.
