County proposes relocation for RVs parked near Providence St. Peter Hospital

Thurston County staff introduced a proposal to relocate the recreational vehicles (RVs) that are parked along Ensign Rd. at Providence St. Peter’s Hospital to Carpenter Road.

During the Regional Housing Council regular meeting on Thur., Sept. 23, Thurston County Manager Ramiro Chavez shared that the RVs at the hospital had taken parking spaces that had previously been used by  hospital staff and medical providers.

The problem has become a major issue as Chavez estimated that around 15 to 20 RVs were parked in the area, in use by transient people who live in them full-time. As a result, the county has considered different options to clear up the space.

In his proposal, the county manager shared that they are planning to relocate the vehicles to Carpenter Road, along Martin Way. Chavez explained that the relocation is temporary as the county continues to seek long-term housing solutions.

He noted that they are intending to move the RVs at Carpenter Road for a period of 6 to 7 months until the county is able to purchase a property to accommodate the transient residents’ vehicles.

In addition, the relocation would only cover seniors. “It’s very strategic, it’s very selective,” Chavez said. He also urged the city of Olympia to enforce stricter parking rules along Ensign Road. The County Commissioners is yet to take action regarding the proposal.

“We have to do something. Doing nothing is no longer an option,” Chavez concluded.
