Commissioners hold fourth meeting to review project progress

A subcommittee of the Thurston County Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) held its fourth meeting on August 2 to discuss the current project plan for renovating the Thurston County Courthouse Campus.

The subcommittee addressed Chandler Court's operational costs, financing for the project, and opportunities for current buildings.

According to a press release, an executive session was held to discuss the purchase of a building, but no action was taken.

Staff gave an overview of the funding and staffing for Chandler Court operations, which total about $1.36 million and are funded by ARPA funds.

The subcommittee discussed the need to present a recommendation to the full BOCC for continued funding for Chandler Court, as services will continue until a courthouse solution is identified.

The subcommittee reviewed the county's financial position and discussed the feasibility of affording additional lease payments or addressing needs within the current capacity rather than seeking additional funding from voters.

Potential funding and project options included public/private partnerships, lease-to-own arrangements, purchasing and renovating new buildings, renovating current buildings and court space, and constructing new spaces.

The subcommittee directed staff to explore an interim option to renovate buildings 1, 2, 3, and 5 on the current courthouse campus to vacate buildings 4, 6, and 7.

The next subcommittee meeting will be announced once it is scheduled. All meetings are open to the public and will be recorded via Zoom.
