Legal Immigration Services of Olympia (LISO) will host the Funk for Freedom benefit dance to support free legal representation for detained immigrants.
All proceeds from the all-ages event will go toward pro bono legal representation to local immigrants detained at the Northwest ICE Processing Center.
LISO, a nonprofit, invites the community to the event featuring live bands, Func Pro Tunc and Choro Tomorrow, on Saturday, Sept. 26, from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., at the South Puget Sound Community College Lacey Campus. The campus is located at 4220 6th Ave SE in Lacey.
“LISO is dedicated to ensuring that underserved and often isolated detained immigrants receive expert legal counsel during critical moments in their proceedings,” said LISO in a news release sent to The JOLT.
There will also be a dedicated children’s activity area with books, games and art supplies. A separate quiet area will be available for conversation and networking for attendees seeking a more relaxed environment.
Various food and beverages will be available, along with raffle tickets for an additional purchase or via donation.
The event will also serve as a community resource hub, featuring information from organizations providing services to immigrants living in Thurston County.
Admission to the event at the South Puget Sound Community College Lacey Campus is through a suggested donation of $5 to $5,000.

LISO's work has never been more important, given what is happening with immigrant detentions and deportations in our community. Please support!
