‘Disco Dave’ to lead shortened 2025 Thurston County Fair

Posted

The Thurston County Fair is getting a revamp for 2025 with fewer days, bigger themes and a new mascot.

Organizers announced on Monday, Feb. 10, that the fair will run from July 31 to Aug. 3, condensing its usual schedule into four packed days of events and entertainment.

The fair, which traditionally lasts five days, will have a shorter run due to the availability of the carnival rides. However, the event will continue to bring its signature mix of rides, food, animal exhibits and performances.

Disco Dave the Peacock leads the festivities, a new mascot with a 1970s vibe, who organizers say will “bring the groove” to this year’s celebration.

"We're committed to delivering the same high-quality fair our community loves, just in a more condensed time frame," Thurston County Fair and Event Center Manager Thomasina Cooper said.

Themed days announced

According to the organizers, the fair will feature special themes and discounts for attendees on each of the four days:

Thursday, July 31 – Thrifty Thursday: Fairgoers can enter for just $1 by donating to the Thurston County Food Bank. The kickoff day targets supporting local charitable efforts and encouraging community participation.

Friday, Aug. 1 – Wristband Friday: Visitors can purchase carnival wristbands for unlimited rides to experience all the fair’s attractions.

Saturday, Aug. 2 – First Responders and Military Service Day: Members of the military, police, fire departments and other first responders can enjoy entry for only $2 with a valid ID. The day honors those people who serve the country and provides an opportunity for families to show their appreciation.

Sunday, Aug. 3 – Youth Day: Youths between the ages of 6 and 14 can enter the fairgrounds for just $2.

One of the highlights of the announcement was the introduction of Disco Dave the Peacock, the 2025 mascot.

With his “vibrant plumage” and '70s-inspired persona, Disco Dave is expected to be a hit with visitors of all ages.

The organizers said that the mascot will appear throughout the fair. Disco Dave is also expected to participate in photo opportunities and festival performances.

Transportation and parking

With high attendance numbers expected, the county will provide multiple transportation options to facilitate access to the fairgrounds, which is located on Carpenter Road in Lacey.

Free shuttle bus services will run from Thursday to Sunday, with buses operating from 8:00 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. on the first three days and until 8:30 p.m. on Sunday.

North Thurston Public Schools will provide the shuttles, which pick up and drop off visitors at designated locations, including the district’s bus barn and Woodland Elementary School.

Parking is available at the Carpenter Road entrance for people driving to the fairgrounds.

Daily parking costs $7 per vehicle, while a season parking pass is available for $22.

Exhibits, contests and attractions

True to its tradition, community members are invited to participate in entering exhibits in categories, such as arts and crafts, baking, photography, woodworking and gardening.

The fair will also feature various attractions, including animal exhibits, interactive displays, food vendors, live entertainment and carnival rides.

The fair’s baking contests, such as the popular chocolate cake, cookie, berry pie and cupcake competitions, are expected to return with updated rules and prizes. Details about the contests will be released closer to the event.

For people interested in showcasing their talents, the Exhibitor’s Guide outlines entry procedures for three divisions: Open Class, 4-H, and FFA (Future Farmers of America).

Open Class is open to all ages and skill levels, while 4-H and FFA entries are limited to youth participants affiliated with the organizations.

Meanwhile, applications for commercial vendor booths and food concession spaces are being accepted.

The organizers said returning vendors have priority for booth selection, but new vendors who complement existing participants will be considered.

Vendor and camping options

Camping is available at three designated sites near the fairgrounds for people traveling from outside the area or looking to immerse themselves fully in the fair experience.

Staff will assign campsites to maximize capacity, with options for electrical hookups or generator use. Camping fees range from $89 to $133, depending on amenities.

"We're confident this four-day format will create an even more vibrant and engaging experience for everyone,” Cooper said.
