Early morning car chase ends in arrest, firearm seized

A car chase through west Olympia in the early hours of Saturday, May 24, ended with the arrest of a 34-year-old man and the recovery of a loaded firearm.

The Thurston County Sheriff’s Office (TCSO) released video footage taken from a patrol vehicle dash cam and a deputy body cam that showed the events leading up to the suspect’s arrest.

Shortly after 2 a.m., patrolling TCSO deputies attempted to stop a vehicle near The Evergreen State College due to expired registration tabs.

The driver failed to yield and sped off, reaching speeds of nearly 100 miles per hour.

The chase ended in a residential neighborhood near the 3300 block of Windolph Loop NW, where the vehicle crashed into a tree.

The driver fled on foot, but was located shortly afterward by a K-9 unit. The driver was found hiding beneath a deck.

The suspect, later identified as Nicholas O’Brian Bournes by police records, did not comply with commands to surrender, which lead K-9 Igo to forcefully take him out of hiding.

Following the arrest, deputies executed a search warrant on the vehicle and discovered a loaded .357 magnum handgun.

According to the authorities, the suspect is a convicted felon with a criminal history in multiple states.

“He also had an active warrant out of King County for communicating with a minor for immoral purposes,” TCSO Sheriff Derek Sanders said in a social media post.

The suspect was treated for his dog bite suffered during the arrest and booked into Thurston County jail.

He faces multiple charges, including first-degree unlawful possession of a firearm, eluding a police vehicle, obstructing a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest.

Good job TCSO! Now if the judges will just take him off the streets, we’ll be better off.
