Strengthening Families Community Conversation

Emerging Substance Use Trends: Understanding the Rise of ‘Gas Station Drugs’ and What Families Need to Know

Brought by Family Education & Support Services (FESS)

Posted
The threats facing families are changing and keeping up can be difficult. From sophisticated online scams and AI-powered fraud to cyberbullying, exploitation and new substances appearing in communities, parents and caregivers are often left trying to understand risks they may have never encountered before.

To help families navigate these rapidly changing challenges, Family Education & Support Services (FESS) is bringing local experts and community members together for a free, two-part Strengthening Families Community Conversation series on October 8 and October 15 at Educational Service District 113 (ESD 113) in Tumwater.

New products and emerging substances can be difficult for parents and caregivers to identify, and information about their risks may not always be readily available.

The second conversation will bring together experts to discuss what families should know about changing substance use patterns.

Topics will include:
• Current substance use trends among youth and in local schools
• Emerging trends in Washington and locally
• Known and unknown short- and long-term risks associated with emerging substances
• Warning signs that substance use may be becoming problematic
• Safety and prevention strategies for families
