The City of Tumwater is seeking residents who want to join its new Equity Commission.
The Tumwater City Council established the commission on Oct. 21, 2025, to serve as an advisory body on issues affecting underrepresented groups and barriers that prevent them from engaging with city services.
“The establishment of an advisory board to the (Tumwater) City Council provides a pathway to better understand the challenges facing Tumwater, to develop new insights into the community and to better serve everyone,” said Assistant City Administrator Kelly Adams in an announcement from the city about the advisory board on Tuesday, Jan. 27.
The city is looking for seven members to fill the commission seats. Applicants must reside within Tumwater city limits, though one member may live in the Tumwater Urban Growth Area.
Commission members will serve on a volunteer basis and do not receive any compensation.
The terms of the initial commission members will be staggered. Three members will serve a two-year term, while four will serve a three-year term. All members will serve three-year terms thereafter.
Applications may be submitted through the city’s website here. The deadline is 5 p.m. on Feb. 20.
People interested in the commission may also contact Adams at kadams@ci.tumwater.wa.us for more information.

If you see racism and inequity around every corner, in every closet, and a microaggression in every other spoken word, feel free to apply for this critically needed commission that the taxpayers are in dire need of.

I fear that ill-defined initiatives like this will flail about trying to find justification and attract participants more interested in grievances than solutions. Hopefully I’m wrong.
