Evergreen State’s Corona Parker dazzles in CCC Multi-event Championships

Posted

Graduate student-athlete Corona Parker broke school and personal records in track and field while representing Evergreen State College last Friday, April 19. This athletic feat was at the two-day Cascade Collegiate Conference Championships for the Multi-Events, at the Eastern Oregon University Track and Field facility in La Grande, Oregon.

Parker excelled in her second conference championship in the heptathlon, finishing 9th out of 14 competitors after accumulating 4131 points, her best in the seven-event competition.

"Corona's performance included two Evergreen records, three personal bests, and all seven events were in Evergreen's top ten all-time lists despite competing in cold and windy conditions with a foot injury while enrolled in her first term as a graduate program student. What a fantastic performance," said Assistant Coach Scott Copeland.

Parker kicked off proceedings with a bang in her first event Thursday in the 100m hurdles. Despite finishing 6th in the event, she broke the school record for the event with a record time of 15.25s, also a personal best.

She then competed in the high jump, where she excelled in the past few track-and-field meets. She finished her highest rank in the events with 3rd place after clearing 1.59 meters, just short of her 1.62m personal best. Concluding her Day 1 of the championships were her performances in shotput, throwing 9.19m for 9th place, and 200m dash, finishing 11th after clocking in at 28.15s.

Parker continued her hot streak the following day, breaking her best at multi-events for the long jump as she leaped 4.84m, good enough for a 10th-place finish. She also competed on the javelin throw with a decent 8th-place finish after hurling at 27.56m.

She ended the contests with a bang after breaking another personal and school record in the 800m run, clocking 2:41.50 despite finishing 10th. She concluded the whole heptathlon with a personal best of 4131 points and 9th overall.

"So many congratulations for Corona! School records, personal bests, and an overall national ranking mark was just so awesome to be a part of," stated Head Coach Joel Pearson.
