A transient Tumwater man has been charged with two felonies and a gross misdemeanor after allegedly breaking the door of a woman’s house to forcibly grab his girlfriend who was visiting there, and then threatening to kill both women.

The 26-year-old man was charged with residential burglary, felony harassment – threat to kill and fourth-degree assault by the Thurston County Prosecuting Attorney on April 13.

Olympia police arrested the man on April 11 after a reported disturbance in the 2300 block of Ninth Avenue.

The reporting party said a female acquaintance, later identified as the suspect’s girlfriend, came to her apartment to get away from the suspect, who at that point was throwing rocks at her window and threatening to kill her if she did not let him in.

Officers observed that the rear sliding door of the reporting party’s address had been shattered, leaving glass scattered on the ground.

Police said the reporting party was “visibly frightened” by the incident and was initially hesitant to provide a statement in fear of retaliation from the suspect, whom she described as “crazy” and “unpredictable.”

After officers allayed her fears, the reporting party said the girlfriend arrived at her apartment and pounded on the front door. Once inside, the girlfriend told the woman that she was trying to escape her boyfriend.

The girlfriend told the reporting party that the man had assaulted her in the past and she feared getting assaulted again. Shortly after, the suspect arrived at the woman’s address demanding his girlfriend to come outside.

The reporting party said the man threatened to assault his girlfriend if she did not come out.

The reporting party said she then called 911 and informed the man that she was calling law enforcement, at which point the suspect said he would kill her. The reporting party said she was scared for her life and believed that the man could carry out his threat.

The suspect then moved to the rear side of the apartment, the reporting party told police, and began striking the glass sliding door. The suspect eventually broke the door then entered the apartment.

The reporting party said the man grabbed his girlfriend to get her out of the front door, but the girlfriend was yelling “No” and pulling away from him. The suspect threatened to kill himself if his girlfriend did not go with him.

Police then arrived at the scene. Officers noted that the suspect was standing next to his girlfriend and was holding her right elbow with his left hand.

The suspect was arrested without incident. He stated that he was “going to jail” and claimed that he was just at the reporting party’s address to rescue his girlfriend who was supposedly being held in the apartment against her will.

“Tell them you were being held against your will,” officers quoted the suspect as telling his girlfriend during the arrest.

The girlfriend denied anything physical happening between her and the suspect. Police said she did not provide any information other than the fact that she told him where she was going to be, and the suspect followed her there.

The suspect's girlfriend also told the reporting party that she feared her boyfriend because he appeared to be under the influence of something, according to the police report.

The suspect was booked into the Thurston County Jail for fourth-degree assault, harassment – threats to kill and harassment.
