An abundance of rain over the past few days, coupled with the likelihood of more precipitation, has led to a flood watch being issued for Thurston County.
The National Weather Service Office in Seattle said the flood watch is in effect for the region from 7 a.m. on Friday, March 13, until 5 p.m. on Sunday, March 15.
“Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood prone locations,” states the flood watch, which was issued on Thursday morning, March 12.
The advisory identified three rivers that could reach flood stage.
“Moderate to heavy rainfall from a weak atmospheric river will keep rivers on the Chehalis, Newaukum, and the Skookumchuck running near flood stage Friday through Sunday,” states the flood watch.
The advisory comes amid a backdrop of more inclement weather ahead with rain and snow in the forecast for Friday, as well as a chance for rain and snow on Saturday, March 14.
The daytime high for Friday should be near 40 degrees. There is a 100 percent chance of precipitation with little or no snow accumulation expected. Rain and snow are likely on Friday evening with the overnight low projected to dip to around 29 degrees. Little or no snow accumulation is expected.
There is also a chance of rain and snow before 2 p.m. on Saturday, then a chance of rain showers. Forecasts are subject to change.
