FC Olympia announced on its website last Tuesday that former player Kellyn Green-Farrell has been promoted to head coach of the Artesians' USL W League squad for the upcoming 2025 season. She will replace Raphael Cox, who will resume his coaching duties in the University of Washington Huskies women’s soccer program.
The announcement comes from FC Olympia’s tryout invites posted on social media along with expansion teams Salmon Bay FC and WS Rhodies joining the USL W League Northwest Division, where FC Olympia are back-to-back reigning champions.
"We're thrilled to see Coach Kellyn's rise from player to assistant coach to now the centerpiece of our USL W franchise," said FC Olympia owner Ryan Perkins. "It's great to have someone that connects with where the players are in their playing careers, drawing from her own playing experience."
Coach Kellyn is not a new face in the FC Olympia coaching room, rejoining her club after retirement in the 2024 season as assistant coach of the Artesians women’s team under head coach Ben Willis before his departure to USL Super League pro club Lexington SC midseason. She continued to be part of the coaching staff under Raphael Cox until her promotion.
As a player, she was most remembered by the Olympia faithful as the captain of FC Olympia’s inaugural USL W League squad in 2023, then known as Oly Town FC. She led the Artesians to a USL national playoff appearance in their first year in the USL W after an undefeated run in the Northwest Division under then-head coach Chris Wells.
“Kellyn is going to make a great head coach,” said Wells. “She has the ability to relate to the players but also demands a high level for their development. With her long history as a player, she will be a great mentor as our players are looking to continue their careers after college into the professional level.”
Playing mainly as a defender, Kellyn had a prolific route from college to pro to the USL W League. Born and raised in Colorado, she played college soccer at South Dakota State, where she was a four-year all-conference selection.
She then turned pro and played for local USL W-league teams Colorado Rush and Real Colorado before moving to Seattle in 2014 to play for Sounders FC Women while spending the summer offseason playing for the Issaquah Gunners in the WPSL.
On those pro teams, she had the chance to play with and against standout players from the United States Women’s National Team.
“One of my standout moments was playing for the Colorado Rush at a packed Starfire stadium against the Seattle Sounders Women in 2012 when they had Alex Morgan, Sydney Leroux, Megan Rapinoe and Hope Solo,” said Kellyn Green-Farrell on her most memorable playing experience. “We lost 2-1 but gave them a much harder game than they thought we would.”
With the 2025 season still far from kicking off, the Artesians have already announced early tryouts for the next season’s teams starting on December 21. They are biding to return to the USL W playoffs after their historic milestone last year, when they got their first-ever USL W playoff win over Oakland Soul SC.
"Players can look forward to the same competitive training environment established at FC Olympia over the previous two USL W seasons," said Green, describing what players can expect in 2025. "They can also look forward to a training environment in which they are expected to push themselves outside of their comfort zone, play with freedom, creativity, and without fear. We not only want to win, we also want to help get our players to the next level."
