Recently, I have found a unique spot in the audience that gives me a bird’s-eye view of the incredible ventures happening in Thurston County that have both a local and national impact.
This week, I am delighted to have you join me for the conversation I had with Olympia’s own Tyler Kae, who is a current contestant on the 27th season of NBC’s "The Voice." Along with this conversation, I will be sharing a review of Olympia Family Theatre’s "Wild Fire and the Bird Scouts," which premiered last weekend.
North Thurston High School alumni Tyler Kae is a contestant on this 27th season of NBC’s "The Voice," and has reiterated Olympia’s spot on the map.
During Kae’s blind audition episode, the audience gets a glimpse of Kae’s journey in music along with her personal interests and appreciation for her supportive community.
Fans of 1980’s music and Cyndi Lauper might have recognized Kae’s audition song.
“My parents and I listened to 80’s music, and I became obsessed with everything 80’s related. In middle school, I had a fan account dedicated to it," Kae said.
Kae described the respect and admiration for Lauper and her song, "Girls Just Want to Have Fun."
“Cyndi Lauper is all about being unique and doing your thing," Kae said.
That was further confirmed for Kae when she did research on this beloved hit. Kae came across an interview with Lauper that described how she took a song originally written by a man, gave it new meaning, and transformed it into a song for the girls — a real feminist anthem.
Soaking in the song’s background and meaning, Kae reflected.
“It is a fun song but when you break it down, you are reminded that we (women) are not the fortunate ones. Look at the lyrics, ‘Some boys take a beautiful girl and hide her away from the rest of the world.’ That is the story of many women. This song is emotional, and you can see that when you slow it down," Kae said.
We are all glad that Kae has chosen to “to walk in the sun."
Speaking of her time in the sun, Kae spoke on the filming of "The Voice."
“Everyone who worked on The Voice was so kind and encouraging," she said.
Kae was grateful for the lessons she learned from the professionals in the industry, as well as fellow contestants. She enjoyed watching the creative process of the band members and observing her coach’s viewpoint on music and ability to fine tune the little things to turn something extraordinary.
Tyler Kae has something to say to Thurston County.
“I am so grateful for this opportunity, and have so many ‘thanks’ to give for the outpouring of love that I received from Olympia and people all around Washington," Kae said.
"I never thought I would be able to do something like this. I want to encourage people to go for it, whatever it is you want to do with your life. It’s worth it to live out your dreams, no matter what the setbacks may be. Go Team Adam”

I’ve heard many warblings about how awesome OFT’s newest performance is. With engagements blocking my calendar throughout March, I must trust my very own Camp Fire Girl and Bluebird Alumni (my mom, Dee) to guide me through just how wonderful this show is.
"Wild Fire and the Bird Scouts" is a fun show for the entire family and for all the children at heart. The costume and set design were simple, but effective and created a comfortable atmosphere.
Each member of this kid-only cast portrayed either a bird or a natural element, and together they guided the audience through beautiful allegories and life lessons. Dee left the show with awe, nostalgia and gratitude.
“This show had a really clever script and rather difficult lines for the young kids to memorize…and they got it perfectly!” she said.
In attending a show at OFT, you “help” two birds with one stone: you support the arts and join the village that is raising up the next generation of artists and world changers.
"Wild Fire and the Bird Scouts" will be running for the next two weekends. Buy your tickets here.
