Girl Scout troop approved to create mini library in Lacey’s Wonderwood Park

The Lacey Parks, Culture and Recreation Board recently approved Girl Scout Troop 45298’s proposal to come up with a free little library.

Troop 45298 Co-leader Jackie Means presented the proposal to the board during its meeting on June 7, saying that they plan to install the mini library at Wonderwood Park.

“We want to have a really diverse spectrum of books in the mini library for everyone in our community,” said Means. “We also do recognize that the mini library will be geared towards younger children or just children in general.”

Means added that the library will be for everyone from Kindergarten to Grade 12 and “there might even be some books that adults would enjoy, but we are mostly trying to gear it towards children to incite that passion for reading and learning.”

Troop 45298 said they plan to place the mini library near the park's small playground toys at the Sunset Drive entrance.

“If a kid gets tired of playing on the toys, they can grab a book,” the proposal read. “Even parents can look at books while their kids play.”

The group said the plan is to use recycled or repurposed materials to build a “large cabinet on a pole with a clear door (clear plastic or similar durable material, no glass)” to serve as a mini library.

The goal is to have five to ten books per reading level, namely, toddler/board books, middle-reader books and early teen chapter books.
