A vehicle driven by an alleged hit-and-run suspect was snagged and stopped by a Thurston County Sheriff’s Office unit using a Grappler in Lewis County on Wednesday, June 25.
The sheriff’s office became involved in the situation when it was advised the Washington State Patrol was in pursuit of the suspect from Pierce County. At some point during the pursuit, the Washington State Patrol requested a sheriff’s office unit with a Grappler.
The sheriff’s office unit joined the pursuit, and then took the lead as the chase entered Lewis County.
“The Grappler was deployed at approximately 75 (miles per hour), and the net sheered off causing the suspect driver to leave the roadway and come to a stop in a field,” said Thurston County Sheriff Derek Sanders in a social media post on Wednesday.
“Deputies pursued the suspect on foot through fields until they reached the Chehalis River where the suspect jumped in. Centralia units nearby got the assistance of a fisherman in a boat, where the suspect was arrested and transported up the river to a nearby park.”
The unidentified suspect was taken into custody by the Washington State Patrol for attempting to elude and hit-and-run.
“I awarded the fisherman with one of our challenge coins for stepping up and helping get a dangerous driver in custody,” Sanders said.
No injuries were reported and there was no damage to the sheriff’s office unit.
