Greg J. Cuoio Community Park opens to the public in Lacey

Trails, playgrounds and picnic areas are now open at Greg J. Cuoio Community Park after the City of Lacey unveiled its newest recreation destination.

The opening marks the first public portion of the project, although the city has not released a timeline for future phases.

Visitors can explore 3 miles of forested trails, a nature-themed, inclusive and accessible playground, 2 acres of open lawn and a large picnic shelter with 12 picnic tables and 75 parking spaces.

A temporary disc golf course is also open. The city said a permanent 18-hole course is planned in partnership with the South Puget Sound Disc Golf Association.

The newly opened area encompasses 139 developed acres within the larger 537-acre Greg Cuoio Park and Greenways system. According to the city, the system protects forests, wetlands, streams and wildlife habitat, while providing outdoor recreation opportunities.

City Manager Rick Walk said it is the largest park in Lacey and one of the region’s most significant natural spaces.

In a message  marking the opening on Thursday, July 30, Walk said the vision to preserve the property at 2711 Carpenter Road NE began more than 15 years ago.

The park is named for former City Manager Greg Cuoio, who served Lacey for 24 years. Walk said Cuoio’s vision, leadership and action helped make the park possible.

Walk said the park offers a place for families to gather, children to play and visitors to experience the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest.

“(Former City Manager) Greg (Cuoio) believed in protecting the things that make our community special, not just for today, but for future generations. His leadership helped preserve these remarkable lands so families could connect with nature and wildlife could thrive,” Walk said.

Walk also said Cuoio’s legacy “isn’t just found on the entrance sign,” adding that it can be found in the trails, natural surroundings and future generations that will enjoy the park.

Future phases will continue to balance environmental stewardship with recreational amenities. Additional information, park updates and frequently asked questions are available here.

Congratulations to the City and for prior Council's to support the community leadership by Greg Cuoio over his 24 years as a Lacey City Manager. The entire Thurston County has benefitted from Greg's leadership. Thanks Greg for being a true public servant.
