For the Women Build 2025 initiative, the South Puget Sound Habitat for Humanity (SPS Habitat for Humanity) is set to finish houses at the Tâlíčn development in Tumwater with the aid of women builders.
The group anticipates 32 volunteers daily from Thursday to Sunday for a two-week period covering May 7–10 and May 14–17.
The initiative raises awareness of the challenges women face in homebuying.
“Single female households are six percent less likely to own their home than single male households, while also paying higher mortgage rates than similarly situated men. That’s despite women more reliably making loan payments,” the organization said in an email to The JOLT News.
A news release stated that teams of eight women sought partnerships, kickstarting the event with over $85,000 to fund the SPS Habitat for Humanity mission.
“This is our biggest Women Build event yet,” said Tanya Mote, SPS Habitat for Humanity Chief Advancement Officer. “We’re not only building homes, we’re celebrating the difference we can make when women come together.”
The presenting sponsor is local company Forma Construction. Many restaurants have also signed up to donate lunch to the women volunteers.
Premier Sponsors include Twinstar Credit Union, Olympia Federal Savings (OlyFed), Puget Sound Energy, Port of Olympia, Specialty Sponsors, Our Community Credit Union (OURCU), Knight Fire Protection, Harbor Foods, Fastenal, O Bee Credit Union, Anderson Construction, Community Partners, Navigate Financial, Sound Credit Union, Johnson, Stone & Pagano, P.S., Redfin and A&D Enterprises.
During the volunteer days, women builders are expected to frame and raise the walls on four homes, and complete the finishing work on two more at the Tâlíčn development.
Tâlíčn, named in partnership with the Cowlitz Indian Tribe, means “to help” in the Lower Cowlitz Coast Salish language.
The Tâlíčn area has four completed townhomes, 10 in progress, and 14 in groundwork. The neighborhood is expected to total 28 townhomes upon completion.
The SPS Habitat for Humanity is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that has built homes in Thurston County since 1989.
The nonprofit’s programs include advancing homeownership, home repair and accessibility improvements, homeowner and public education, and donation-driven stores in Olympia and Yelm.
SPS Habitat for Humanity has more volunteer opportunities all year round.
The nonprofit accepts volunteers at its stores in Yelm and Olympia, at construction sites, and at its office. Opportunities are available at its website.
Over the next five years, SPS Habitat for Humanity plans to build 162 homes in the region.

I don't recognize this development name, so where in Tumwater is it located? It would be cool to know how it is pronounced, too.
