Hazardous weather advisory extended in Thurston County

The Thurston County Public Health and Social Services Department is extending a hazardous weather advisory in order to increase shelter-in-place efforts and offer extended nightly shelter beds.

The advisory, which now ends at 8 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 23, was scheduled to end on Tuesday evening, Jan. 21.

“The advisory may be extended again depending on review of forecasted weather patterns and shelter staff capacity,” the department said in an update on the issue on Tuesday.

The overnight low for Thurston County is forecast at 27 degrees on Tuesday, 26 degrees on Wednesday, Jan. 22, and 30 degrees on Thursday, the National Weather Service said.

Overnight emergency shelter is available at Sergio’s Place for unsheltered adults over the age of 18 on Tuesday and Wednesday from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m.

The shelter guest entrance for Sergio’s Place is located at 3444 Martin Way NE, Olympia. Pets are welcome. For more information, call 360-706-2287.

For families with children under the age of 18, nightly shelter is available at Pear Blossom Place, 837 7th Ave. SE, Olympia. People can call to sign up on weekdays starting at 9 a.m. The shelter, which is open nightly from 9 p.m. to 9 a.m., can be reached at 360-918-7879.

Cold weather donations are also being accepted at Sergio’s Place, Tuesdays through Saturdays, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The donation collection entrance is located at 3501 Mary Elder Road NE. There is no parking on Martin Way.

Items needed include blankets, twin and single bed sheets, ramen, nonperishable snacks, instant coffee, creamer, hot tea, hot chocolate, disposable cups and utensils, socks, warm clothing and undergarments, hand warmers, tents, sleeping bags, tents, gloves, mittens and hats.
