The Sage Connection

Hello, and welcome to my world.

Are you a retired “senior” citizen or just about to reach that age? No matter! Congratulations on making it this far.

What comes next? Do you join Senior Services for the South Sound, the “senior center”? Become a proud member of AARP? Renovate your kids rooms into man caves and sewing parlors?  Start the garden you have planning in your head for the past few years? Now that you have the time, do the hobbies you have long dreamed about still hold their allure?

Inquiring minds would like to know…

If you are like most of us who have gone before, you probably have some questions.  COVID-19 has pretty much put the brakes on cruises and holiday family gatherings. What happens to your travel plans, retirement, anniversary and birthday parties?

Enter the ZOOM application for your phone and/or computer. Zoom can bring your family, friends, businesses, co-workers, civic clubs and bible study groups into your home with as many members as you like. It is easy to use and free if used within the allotted time frame. If you are still working part-time from home it is a great way to enjoy the feeling of inclusion with your co-workers, especially if you are working on a group project. (www.ZOOM.com)

Podcasts can bring books, discussion groups and educational topics into your home and if your spouse or partner is interested in different subjects, earbuds solve the problem of noise confusion. (www.podcast.com)

YouTube provides music for every generation as well as some good movies, instructional and cooking videos. (www.youtube.com)

In the coming weeks we will explore what retirement means today and how it differs from your parents.

We will not limit this column to technical information. Grandfamilies, caregiving and caregivers, living arrangements, health issues, scam alerts and more will be discussed along with volunteer opportunities and vacation packages geared toward to you with your grandchildren.

Let us know what topics interest you and we will do our best to get the information for you.

For now, most important of all, stay safe.

I'm a long-time senior, retired over 24 years. Today I got a flyer (among others) in the morning paper from Fred Meyer, noting prominently that next Tuesday is "Senior Discount Day". However, everything in the flyer was toys for grandchildren (?), clothes for sons/daughters, etc. but NOTHING for a senior him/herself. I'd like to see ads for something I might really need or use.
