In observance of World Water Day, the Surfrider Olympia chapter is holding its first cigarette butt cleanup of the year on Saturday, March 22.
Volunteers interested in participating can meet at Olympia City Hall at noon on Saturday.
“It’s a fun, family-friendly, and hands-on way to help out and meet people in the community,” said Surfrider Olympia in an announcement sent to The JOLT News on Tuesday, March 18.
“Cigarette butts contain plastic filters, which can end up in storm drains and eventually our oceans. Since start butt pick-ups in 2019, volunteers have removed 158,214 butts off of downtown Olympia streets.”
Surfrider Olympia hosts monthly chapter meetings on the last Wednesday of each month from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The meetings are open to the public. The next public meeting is at Three Magnets Brewing in downtown Olympia on Wednesday, March 26.
“This is a chance for community members and volunteers to gather and learn more about projects, have fun, and connect with other members and volunteers. This month’s meeting is an ocean trivia night,” Surfrider Olympia said.

The City could follow many other cities, and prohibit smoking on public sidewalks. This won't totally solve the problem, but might cut it in half.
People who want to smoke on downtown sidewalks can go to downtown Lacey instead. If they can find it.
