One person was arrested and another was hospitalized after a collision on North Street in front of Olympia High School on Sunday evening, after one vehicle veered in front of another.

Olympia police booked Scott C. Bice, 26, into the Thurston County Jail and he was later charged with vehicular assault, driving under the influence, possession of meth and possession of heroin.

According to a probable cause affidavit filed in Thurston County Superior Court, police arrived on the scene of the crash at about 6:36 p.m. Sunday. Two vehicles — a passenger car and an SUV — collided head on. Two witnesses said it appeared the SUV had veered into the path of the passenger car. A traffic officer said the collision appeared to happen in the passenger car’s lane, meaning the SUV traveled across the center of the road and into the car’s path.

A woman was trapped inside the car when police arrived. Officers noted visible cuts to her face, and she was unable to answer questions. The top of her car had to be cut off to get her out of the vehicle. The Olympia Police Department, on its official Twitter account, described the woman’s injuries as “serious but not life threatening.”

Two people who pulled up to the crash right after it happened told police they saw the SUV’s driver walking around the scene, and into a nearby yard. Police found the driver, identified as Bice, walking around the scene, according to court documents.

An officer went to the nearby yard where Bice was seen walking and found a baggie and a lockbox filled with more baggies. Field tests would indicate that the baggies were filled with heroin and meth, according to court documents. Police believe Bice discarded the items in the yard after the crash, according to their reports.

A breathalyzer test indicate that Bice was not intoxicated, but an officer suspect he was under the influence of substances because his eyes were bloodshot and pupils contracted.

Officers allegedly found more baggies stuffed in Bice’s pants during a pat down. The baggies appeared to contain heroin.

Bice was transported to a hospital where blood was drawn for a drug test. Results are pending. He complained of pain from the collision, but  doctors reported that he didn’t have any serious injuries, and he was medically cleared to be booked into the jail.
