High heat prompts hazardous weather advisory in Thurston County

A hazardous weather advisory is in effect amid soaring daytime highs that are forecast to easily reach the middle to upper 90s in Thurston County.

The Thurston County Public Health & Social Services Department issued the advisory on Monday, July 20.

The advisory, which is in place through Wedensday evening, July 22, increases shelter-in-place efforts across the region.

“Olympia Mutual Aid Partners (OlyMAP) will be conducting outreach with emergency supplies to those (people) without shelter,” said the health department in the advisory.

Outlook

National Weather Service Office in Seattle data had the daytime high at 95 degrees on Tuesday, July 21. The overnight low should be around 63 degrees with patchy smoke before 9 p.m.

The daytime high is forecast to climb to 99 degrees on Wednesday. The overnight low should be around 61 degrees. The daytime high on Thursday, July 23, should be near 81 degrees.

Sergio’s Service Center will extend its hours to 8 p.m. on Tuesday and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday. The shelter guest entrance is at 3444 Martin Way NE, Olympia. Pets are welcome. For more information, call 360-706-2287.

Interfaith Works will accept hot weather donations at Sergio’s through Fridays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 3501 Mary Elder Road NE in Olympia.

Items needed include bottled water, sports drinks, popsicles, nonperishable snacks, tarps, hats, summer clothing and sunscreen.
