A transient allegedly began slashing and stabbing at the manager of a Shell Station after she asked him to take down a makeshift homeless shelter he had built in the parking lot at approximately 7:30 a.m. on May 22.
Mohammed Cobain, 41, had set up a makeshift cardboard shack in the Shell station parking lot at 2125 Caton Way SW and was “muttering about being God” according to the police report.
Shell station manager Monica Bowen informed Cobain that he was trespassing, and attempted to remove the cardboard “ceiling” to the shack. Bowen told police that Cobain was “acting mental” and “combative.” Her recorded police interview is below this story.
Cobain allegedly responded by "yelling and screaming" and swinging a “collapsible Swiss army knife with a three-to-four inch blade” in a "figure 8 motion" at Bowen. According to the police report, Cobain lunged at her in a stabbing motion at her face and throat.
Cobain was contacted by Olympia Police at the 2000 block of Evergreen Park Dr NW. He told police that he never had a weapon and that the female was yelling at him, “verbally assaulting” him while she attempted to tear down his shelter. He denied having a weapon or being argumentative with Bowen and accused her of "cussing" at him and being disrespectful. Cobain's recorded police interview is below this story.
Cobain was booked into the Thurston County Jail for felony assault in the second degree.

Jesus, do you need to have a tree fall on you. Many (most) of the homeless are mentally ill and the state needs to reopen asylums' closed several generations ago allegedly to turn treatment over to the communities as that would be more humane. That sure worked well. Now these folks have no shelter or guidance and are a real menace to their communities. Reopen and build facilities to at least give them some shelter. Mental health/social work intervention can be included as possible but basic shelter and control are vital.
