An investigation has been ordered into the care of an inmate at Thurston County Corrections Facility that led to the dismissal of a nurse.
The investigation stems from an incident on Aug. 10, in which a 29-year-old Olympia woman was booked into the corrections facility.
"Following her booking, she was evaluated by medical staff, who initially attributed her symptoms to narcotics withdrawal," said the Thurston County Sheriff's Office in a news release on Aug. 19.
"Over the following days, the woman's condition deteriorated, and on the evening of (Aug. 13),
she was transported to a local hospital for treatment and was subsequently transferred to
another medical facility to receive a higher level of care. At this time, she remains in critical
condition."
The incident led to the termination of the nurse by the contracted medical provider. Neither the nurse nor the inmate were identified by name.
"Given the seriousness of this incident and the importance of an impartial review, the Thurston
County Sheriff's Office has requested that the Mason County Sheriff's Office conduct an
independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the inmate's care and medical
emergency," said the Thurston County Sheriff's Office in the news release.
"Protecting the health and well-being of those in our custody is a paramount duty of all corrections staff. We take this incident seriously and are committed to ensuring the circumstances surrounding it are thoroughly and independently reviewed. The Thurston County Sheriff's Office will fully cooperate with the Mason County Sheriff's Office in this investigation. No additional information will be released at this time."
