A male inmate at the Thurston County Jail was found unresponsive in his cell two days after he was held in custody, the Sheriff’s Office announced earlier today.

In a press release, the Sheriff’s Office said that corrections staff were alerted to a possible medical emergency in one of the jail’s housing areas on Thursday night.

Responding correctional and on-site medical staff found the inmate unresponsive in his cell and immediately began providing aid, including CPR and Narcan, a medication to rapidly reverse opioid overdose.

The inmate was later transported to Providence St. Peter Hospital, where he died.

The cause of death is still undetermined, the Sheriff’s Office said.

“The Thurston County Coroner and detectives are investigating to determine the cause of death, but nothing suspicious is suspected at this time,” the release read.

The inmate had been in custody since Tuesday, May 3. He was being held on multiple felony charges and felony warrants.

The Sheriff’s Office is withholding the inmate’s name until his family is notified of his death.

The Sheriff’s Office has not stated why the inmate was treated for opioid overdose, if he had access to drugs, nor how he would have access to them.
