Inspire Olympia releases first-year report, launches 2026-28 grant funding cycle

The City of Olympia’s Cultural Access Fund has released a report for Inspire Olympia’s first full year of operation, which supports 874 public programs.

Inspire Olympia is a voter-approved initiative, which dedicates a portion of local sales tax revenue to arts, culture, heritage and science programming. It invested $2.6 million to support 60 local nonprofit organizations between July 2024 and June 2025. Approximately 65% of the activities were offered free of charge to participants.

Recipient organizations were tasked with expanding youth access, supporting programs for underrepresented groups and reducing barriers to participation.

More than half of participating organizations offered youth activities, producing 116 programs that served 19,156 young participants.

About 23 funded nonprofits partnered directly with Olympia School District, delivering 69 in-class programs and 80 field trips across every elementary and middle school in the district. Programs took place in venues ranging from Burfoot Park to the Washington Center for the Performing Arts. Inspire Olympia also covered the cost for 215 buses for the field trips.

The Hawk Foundation for Research and Education in African Culture, which brings African drumming into classrooms, reported strong student engagement.

“Some teachers said it was the most engaged they had seen their students all semester. These experiences go beyond music; they build confidence, curiosity, and a connection to something larger,” stated the City of Olympia’s in an announcement about the report.

Larger grants

Inspire Olympia has announced dates for its 2026-28 grant cycle with expanded funding opportunities. Following adjustments approved by the Olympia City Council in August, the program will offer larger grants than in previous cycles.

Comprehensive grants are going to provide two-year service contracts for up to $85,000 per year to experienced nonprofits with year-round programming. The previous funding offer in this category was $75,000 maximum.

Impact grants offer one-year contracts ranging from $5,000 to $50,000 for newer, smaller organizations or those offering one-time events, an increase from the previous $30,000 ceiling.

In addition to its grants, Inspire Olympia is developing “Inspired+Connected,” an initiative offering training, resources and partnership-building opportunities for funded nonprofits to strengthen organizational practices and support inclusive programming.

“Across the nation, communities are contending with shrinking federal and state support for arts and sciences. Yet here in Olympia, we are charting a different course. Thanks to community support for cultural access funding, our organizations are not only holding steady, they are thriving,” said Cultural Access Advisory Board Chair Melissa Meade.
