Intercity Transit honors longtime bicycle challenge coordinator

Intercity Transit honored Duncan Green, the coordinator of the annual Bicycle Community Challenge (BCC), who is retiring after 17 years of leading the program.

At a board meeting on Wednesday, July 16, Intercity Transit General Manager Emily Bergkamp presented Green with a circular artwork depicting an outline of a person cycling, which some noted was of Green’s likeness.

The Bicycle Community Challenge has been running for 38 years, with Intercity Transit hosting it for the past 21 years, according to Green. It is a series of cycling events every year that aims to promote the use of cycling as a mode of transportation.

It starts every February with the Winter Bicycle Challenge and continues with the Earth Day Market Ride in April and the actual cycling challenge, which runs for the entire month of May. One of the goals of the challenge is to log the most miles ridden in the entire month for a chance to win prizes.

Bergkamp and the agency’s board members commended Green for his work through the years and for leaving a legacy that they can continue.

“I know that the BCC wouldn't be what it is today without Duncan's influence,” Bergkamp said. “He really has created a legacy in the BCC that we can all turn to and really enjoy.”

Board director Wendy Goodwin commented on how important Green’s role is in the community.

“You're kind of the boots on the ground, if you will — the face of the public that comes to make sure we're doing what we're saying we're going to do,” Goodwin said.

Board director Brian Hess also appreciated how his work allows the community to better know about Intercity Transit.

“It's people like you that make a governmental agency part of the community. You bring the community in, you get them involved, and you find a way to have them connect so that they take an interest in and want to learn more about governmental agencies,” Hess said.

Green expressed appreciation for all the support he has been given throughout the years. He added he is optimistic about the future of the program, as the agency is integrating it with the Walk N Roll team.

“The amazing support for the BCC and Wall N Roll that our (Intercity Transit Authority) and general managers I’ve had over the years is (a) testament to the forward-thinking and values-driven approach that Intercity Transit has demonstrated for all the years that I worked here,” Green said.

Though he is retiring, regular BCC participants can expect to continue seeing the longtime representative, as Green plans on volunteering for the events.

Thanks to Duncan for bringing the fun to cycling and bringing us together.

I appreciate that Intercity Transit supports cycling.

Cycling and walking are important parts of our overall transportation system.
