The artist reception will be on April 28, 2023, 5-10 p.m. during Olympia Spring Arts Walk. Thomas Architecture Studios is located at 525 Columbia Street, Olympia, WA. Regular gallery hours are Tuesdays-Fridays after 2 p.m.
“Transitory Nature” is a solo exhibition of three dozen digital and mixed-media artworks created over the past 44 months since the artist relocated from South Florida to the Pacific Northwest. Her artwork is a manifestation of experiences discovered during deep immersion in nature. The repository of color, form, pattern, texture, and quality of light are imprinted upon the subconscious and translated into subtle layers of meaning. Her emotional state drives the artistic journey forward.
Johanna’s current work is an analog and digital mixed-media assemblage- a practice that mimics the natural cycles of creation and destruction. Each piece originates as photos and drawings where raw emotions are processed. Recycled materials, junk mail, fabrics, discarded books, letters, drawings, and photos are deconstructed to build collages; the resulting forms are born as new realities. The cycle then continues as these works are digitized, manipulated, cut apart, and re-imagined as continuations of previous works. Her worldview is one that respects organic processes, intuition and collaboration, a celebration of diversity, and holistic connections. Johanna’s artwork holds a mirror of those values.
Johanna Porter was born and raised in Miami, FL, and is a self-taught digital artist. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design from the University of North Florida in 1985. Her career includes over three decades as a graphic artist, illustrator, and art director. In 2019 she moved her studio, PICTURESWITHIN, from South Florida to the Pacific Northwest. At that time Johanna returned to her roots as a visual and public artist, creating work more relevant to her personal growth.
