Know where to go to beat the heat wave

Thurston County is offering several locations for community members to take shelter from the current heat wave over the county.

The county declared a Hazardous Weather Event announcement, on Monday, effective until Thursday, August 17, as the National Weather Service predicted temperatures reaching 91 degrees Fahrenheit over Puget Sound.

Community members can seek refuge from the heat at most local branches of Timberland Regional Library (TRL) and various locations listed below:

Lacey:

• Lacey TRL: 500 College Street SE 
• Hawks Prairie TRL: 8205 Martin Way E Suite B
• Virgil S. Clarkson Senior Center, 6757 Pacific Avenue SE

Olympia:

• Union Gospel Mission (for single adults): 413 Franklin Street NE
• Community Youth Services (for youth aged 18 to 24): 520 Pear Street SE
• Family Support Center (for families): 3545 7th Avenue SW Suite 200
• Olympia TRL: 313 8^th Avenue SE
• West Olympia TRL: 625 Black Lake Boulevard SW
• Sergio’s (at Interfaith Works): 3444 Martin Way NE
• Rosie’s Place (for youth aged 18 to 24): 520 Pear St. SE Olympia, WA 98501

Rainier

Tenino:

Thurston County Emergency Department has also asked for donations to be distributed to those affected by the heat such as water, sunscreen, aloe vera, sports drinks, electrolyte packets and snacks.

Donations can be dropped off at 3501 Mary Elder Road (behind Sergio’s) until Thursday, August 17, from 1:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Click here for more information.
