Acclaimed artist Nishiki Sugawara-Beda is set to unveil her latest installation, Kotodama Converse, at the Leonor R. Fuller Gallery.

In a South Puget Sound Community College press release, Sugawara-Beda's exhibition is scheduled to run from Friday, October 6 to Friday, November 3, with an opening reception from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

The artwork by Kotodama Converse is described as  “lightweight paper and intricate script sculptures accompanied by small sumi paintings on wood.”

The installation presents a blank canvas, inviting viewers to participate in the artistic experience actively.

This encourages art enthusiasts to infuse the exhibit with their emotions, words, and phrases, literally and metaphorically.

This way, viewing transforms into engagement, bridging the artist and observer.

Nishiki Sugawara-Beda, a Japanese-American visual artist, primarily explores the realms of painting and installation.

Her work is deeply rooted in her Japanese heritage, and she delves into themes that touch upon culture, language, and spirituality, all deeply influenced by Zen Buddhism.

By bridging the gap between different cultures and eras, she skilfully incorporates ancient Japanese materials and techniques such as sumi ink, kakejiku landscapes, and rice paper, seamlessly melding them with abstract and expressive forms that resonate with the modern Western aesthetic.
