Lacey residents who want more than a passing familiarity with city government, now have a free, seven-week opportunity to learn firsthand.
The City of Lacey is accepting applications for its second annual Lacey Community Academy, a hands-on program giving residents direct access to the departments, facilities and elected officials that shape daily life in the city. The application window closes no later than March 23 or when all 18 spots are filled.
Starting April 16, sessions run every Thursday evening from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Meetings will take place at Lacey City Hall or other city facilities based on the scheduled topic. Materials and light refreshments will be provided free of charge.
The program is open to residents ages 18 and older, who live within Lacey city limits or its Urban Growth Area.
According to the city, the seven sessions explore various areas of city government operations. Participants will engage with city leaders and staff, in addition to behind-the-scenes facility tours each week.
The seven-week schedule is as follows:
The city said the academy is one part of a larger push to increase transparency and strengthen communication between city hall and residents.
More information about the Lacey Community Academy, including eligibility requirements and the application form, is available at the city’s web page.

The academy is a wonderful learning experience. Learned more about the city of Lacey than I ever knew, many public employees who were absolutely terrific in the way they conveyed information, showed the dedication to the city and their vision for the future. The academy not only provides presentations but also takes you to several areas of City programming to let you experience firsthand. How the city functions. I recommend it highly and commend the city for its commitment to transparency
