Lacey bagged the 2024 Economic Development Award for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion by the Washington Economic Development Association (WEDA) for its Lacey Food Truck Depot program.
The recognition was announced at WEDA's Winter Conference, where seven projects were celebrated for their contributions to economic development.
“WEDA’s Economic Development Awards celebrate outstanding achievement in economic development at the highest level,” said WEDA Board Chair Betty Capestany. “There are leaders across our entire state working tirelessly to grow jobs and strengthen economic vitality in their communities.
“These awards honor leaders and projects that are excelling in this important work,” Capestany added.
The Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Award acknowledges organizations or individuals who have demonstrated efforts in fostering diversity and inclusion within their communities or organizations.
Lacey's Food Truck Depot program stood out for supporting minority- and women-owned businesses in the food industry.
Initiated in 2021 as a pilot program, the Lacey Food Truck Depot aimed to reduce barriers to entrepreneurship by offering a low-cost entry point for aspiring food truck owners.
Through this initiative, the city provided support, including a designated location, services, and guidance on regulatory requirements, enabling six "resident" food trucks that belonged to the minority- and women-owned businesses.
"We are humbled and very honored to receive this important award for this impactful project. It’s a testament to the collective dedication of our city, community members, businesses, and leaders in championing diversity, equity, and inclusion," said Wesley Nguyen, the city’s economic development coordinator.
