Lacey mulls new online payment portal for utility bills

The City of Lacey and Paymentus, an electronic billing platform, are working on a new online payment portal that residents can access to make their utility bill payments conveniently.

Paymentus’ Partner Solutions Manager Lisa Shildt provided a demonstration of the proposed portal during yesterday’s meeting of the Lacey Utilities Committee.

Shildt discussed several ways a customer might be reminded of his or her bills and pay them through the portal, including emails and even text messages.

Residents who are currently enrolled in the existing system would need to sign up again for the Paymentus platform to manage the new system, Shildt clarified.

"With some of our customers, we may tend to put a note or somewhere within the system, maybe the landing page, just to remind customers that if they would like to participate in autopay, they would have to sign back up again," she added.

Councilmember Carolyn Cox expressed concern about the digital security of the platforms, highlighting the importance of safety when it comes to credit card numbers and other personal data.

Shildt maintained that the platform is compliant with the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard, adding that all the information entered by the customers is encrypted.

"We don't actually store the credit card information, everything is encrypted," said Shildt.

Utility Billing Supervisor Carol Hellickson said they initially plan to launch the platform by the end of June, but they are working on possibilities to extend that as they would like more time to communicate the transition to the customers.

"Looks like a pretty straightforward customer-friendly system," Cox remarked.
