Lacey pays tribute to military children

‘When parents serve in the military, their kids serve, too’

The City of Lacey and North Thurston Public Schools both paid tribute to children who have parents who have served or are currently serving in the military as the city council proclaimed the month of April as “Month of the Military Child.”

City proclamation

Lacey Mayor Andy Ryder recognized the efforts of North Thurston Public Schools in supporting their students who have parents in the military.

“We know how difficult it is,” Ryder said. “School is already difficult, but when you have to juggle changing schools and your parents being on active duty, we know how tough that is.”

Ryder also urged the Lacey community to directly connect with military children to “honor, thank, and support” the service they give to the country.

In their proclamation, the city council recognized the military children as a source of “pride and honor to the community.”

The council highlighted that the proclamation is a way to let former and active U.S. armed forces personnel know that “while they are taking care of us, we are taking care of their children.”

“‘[The month of the Military Child’ provides] an opportunity for us to pay tribute to military children and youth for their commitment, struggles, and unconditional support of our troops, because when parents serve in the military, their kids serve, too,” the proclamation read.

North Thurston School District also involved

The district and its Military Support Team  announced its first-ever "Paint the Town Purple" event to commemorate  the  Month of the Military Child.

It distributed purple ribbons to businesses around Lacey as a way to invite them to "support, celebrate and acknowledge" local military children.
