With the start of the school year approaching, the Lacey Police Department is reminding drivers about when they are required to stop for school buses.
State law requires drivers on a two-lane roadway to stop when a school bus has its stop sign extended or lights flashing. This applies to cars going in both directions.
On roadways with three or more lanes, only drivers traveling in the same direction as the bus must stop. The same rule applies when a bus is stopped in a turn lane or when there is a median dividing the roadway. In these cases, oncoming traffic may continue moving but should use caution.
“As always, drive with extra caution around buses and school zones,” the Lacey Police Department said in a statement.
