As part of Human Trafficking Prevention Month in January, the Lacey Police Department (LPD) is raising awareness about how traffickers exploit digital technology to target victims.
According to a LPD social media post, traffickers use social media to find individuals in vulnerable situations, post suspicious job opportunities and communicate through encrypted apps.
They also share explicit digital content, use rideshare apps to control the movements of trafficked individuals and conduct illegal transactions through anonymous financial platforms.
Lastly, traffickers may use digital surveillance to monitor their victims.
LPD urges the public to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity.
If you suspect someone is being trafficked, contact the National Human Trafficking Hotline at 1-888-272-7666 or text 233733 for anonymous support.
Local assistance is available through Innovations at (833) 201-0940. Call 911 or nonemergency dispatch at (360) 704-2740 in emergencies.
