Lacey recently received a SolSmart Silver designation for its efforts to advance solar energy initiatives in the city.

According to the city’s press release, Lacey was recognized for “encouraging the growth of clean, affordable solar energy at the local level.”

“Lacey achieved a SolSmart Silver designation by training staff on best practices for permitting solar energy and solar-plus storage systems,” the statement read.

Additionally, Lacey revamped its local building codes to facilitate the seamless installation of solar panels on residential roofs throughout the city.

The city has also introduced an online portal, easing the application and acquisition of solar permits for interested parties.

Interested individuals are encouraged to explore the city’s webpage for further insights into Lacey's solar initiatives.

The SolSmart program assists local governments in reducing barriers to solar energy adoption among residents and businesses.

Through this initiative, local councils are guided to adhere to established benchmarks drawn from the most effective solar-friendly practices across the country.

The program offers technical support and resources, empowering communities to implement these strategies effectively.

SolSmart, spearheaded by the Interstate Renewable Energy Council and the International City/County Management Association, receives funding from the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Energy Technologies Office.

Since its launch in 2016, over 500 cities, towns, counties and regional organizations have achieved SolSmart recognition.

Not to take anything away from the SolSmart Silver designation, but something needs to be done about getting solar resources in financial reach to lower income individuals. Lower income people are more impacted by power generation increases.
