“We recognize and respect the Tribal People of the Treaty of Medicine Creek as the traditional stewards of this land since time immemorial”

The Lacey Community Relations and Public Affairs Committee unanimously voted to forward the proposed Land Acknowledgement policy to the full city council for approval.

During its meeting on Monday, July 3, Assistant City Manager Shannon Kelley-Fong briefed the committee on the proposal following the input and feedback of the city’s Commission on Equity, Nisqually Indian Tribe and Squaxin Island Tribe.

“The Nisqually Indian tribe actually provided the foundation of the land acknowledgment,” explained Kelley-Fong. “And from there, the city added some additional language to it and the Commission on Equity reviewed that and had some inputs and feedback.”

The proposed Lacey Land Acknowledgement recognizes that the city is on the ancestral land of the Tribal People of the Treaty of Medicine Creek, including the Nisqually Indian Tribe and Squaxin Island Tribe.

“We acknowledge, and remember those Tribal People not recognized today who were absorbed or relocated into other tribes for survival. We recognize the ancestors and their descendants who are still here,” a part of the Land Acknowledgement read.

“We recognize and respect the Tribal People of the Treaty of Medicine Creek as the traditional stewards of this land since time immemorial and their role today in taking care of these lands in perpetuity.”

Kelley-Fong said upon the city council’s approval, the land acknowledgment will be used on city meetings, events or programming. It will also be incorporated on signage, markers, maps and other materials mounted by Lacey.
