Members of the 2022-2023 Lacey Youth Council have officially ended their term with great recognition from the city council during a public meeting on June 15.

Lacey Deputy Mayor Malcolm Miller said this year’s members of the youth council “stood up in an amazing fashion.”

“They really did bring a voice to the council that we hadn't heard,” said Miller.

Miller added that the Lacey Youth Council also made an impact on other jurisdictions as they also want to organize their own youth councils.

“Other jurisdictions are now seeing the value of it, maybe they saw the value of it before, but now they're actually doing something about it,” said Miller. “It looks like you have set a precedence here in the county.”

This year’s youth council is led by Mayor Justin Begley of Timberline High School, and Deputy Mayor Rianna Joseph of River Ridge High School.

The Lacey Youth Council is an advisory body to the Lacey City Council on youth perspectives in the community.

According to the city’s website and social media, Lacey is currently accepting applications from representatives from North Thurston High School, Pope John Paul II High School, River Ridge High School, and Timberline High School to speak for the North Thurston schools and home schools to give around 30 hours of community service as a councilmember and attend meetings twice a month.

The youth council will be made up of 15 members and will serve on the city’s various advisory boards including:

  • Parks, Culture, and Recreation Board
  • Library Board
  • Commission on Equity
  • Historical Commission
