Lacey's newest community playground — the SS Gateway — has set sail at William A. Bush Park.

The City of Lacey announced on Thursday, April 9, that the new tugboat-themed play structure is open at the park, which is located at 4400 Chardonnay Drive SE.

The SS Gateway is designed for children ages 5 to 12, and features expanded play elements and rubber surfacing intended to improve accessibility.

The city described the playground as "a space built for fun, creativity, and community" where children can climb, explore and "create their own high-seas adventures."

The project was funded through a partnership with the Gateway Rotary Club of Thurston County and a grant from the Washington State Recreation and Conservation Office. Local families helped shape the final design, making it "truly a playground built by the community," the city said.

A ribbon cutting and grand opening celebration is scheduled for Wednesday, May 27, at 5:30 p.m. at the park. The event will feature activities, photo opportunities and recognition of project partners.

William A. Bush Park is named for a former Lacey mayor, who was a lifelong supporter of parks and recreation.
