The Thurston Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) appointed Leonard Hernandez as the new County Manager yesterday, February 12.

Hernandez, who previously served in a similar capacity in San Bernardino, California, will officially assume his role on Monday, April 1.

With a government and library administration background, Hernandez brings a breadth of experience to his new position.

Having held positions such as Chief Executive Officer for San Bernardino County and various leadership roles within the county library system, Hernandez is poised to bring perspectives and innovative ideas to Thurston County.

Commissioner Tye Menser expressed enthusiasm for Hernandez's appointment, citing his extensive experience and leadership qualities as valuable assets for the county.

Menser emphasized the thoroughness of the selection process, which involved interviews and evaluations from internal and external stakeholders.

“After a lengthy and thorough hiring process, including multiple panels with internal and external stakeholders, Mr. Hernandez was the top candidate,” said Menser in a press release.

“He brings a wealth of experience and fresh ideas which will be of great benefit to the county. We look forward to welcoming and introducing him to our community.”

During the commissioners' check-in on Monday, Interim Manager and Budget Director Robin Campbell, who oversaw the hiring process, highlighted the importance of offering a comprehensive package that acknowledges Hernandez's expertise and commitment to public service.

Hernandez will receive a starting salary, a hiring bonus, and a moving stipend to assist with his relocation to Thurston County. His starting salary is $220,000, with a hiring bonus of $20,000 and a $5,000 moving stipend.

This is a bad choice. This former county CEO has a massive history of questionable to bad decisions in his former position. Google him and please let your elected commissioner know what you think about their choice. Just because someone interviews well does not mean they are the best choice for a position.

Hernandez should not be in a leadership role with any government. The due diligence by the commissioners seems highly dubious.

Most of our state representatives couldn't even manage themselves let alone others. We have innocent people being targeted just for existing. We have upstanding citizens and women of color being harassed, ostracized and slandered out of their own homes and communities. Ancestors of Black indigenous people, from America who were enslaved on their own land- made to feel unwelcome and excluded in their own community. Falsely accused, to hide the immortal and criminal behavior of watch groups, acting above the law. This mob rule impunity needs to change. We are not going back to slavery, Jim Crow or any other white supremacy, abuse of power structures. We know they use people of color ( black and brown) as the face of white supremacy. But as a California native, I support Hernandez. We need more representatives of color that know how to manage an arena historically

monopolized by supremacist. Thank you Hernandez for making a change for the better, for black and brown native people in this area. Happy black history month.
