As one would expect from someone who makes sure computer networks are set up to work properly, John Hansman planned his business carefully.
Starting what has become Oly Tech Guys as a part-time operation while employed, he developed client relationships and business methods for five years before quitting his job last September to work it full-time. He’ll turn 40 later this year, and had worked at the same firm for 20 years when he left.
Around the same time he re-branded the business. Previously it was called Hans-On Technology Solutions, a near homonym of his own name. A caricature of Hansman remains the company’s logo-mascot.
After 10 months operating from his home in Lacey, last month he rented an office near downtown Olympia at 512 Union Ave. SE. The sunny office is designed to house two employees, warehouse a small amount of parts and software inventory and make space for computers undergoing repairs. Hansman himself is mobile, sometimes there, sometimes visiting clients or working from his home office in Lacey.
In the early days of the business most customers were individuals seeking repairs, software installation or tech help with their computers at home. Increasingly Oly Tech Guys has become “more of a commercial information technology company,” Hansman told The JOLT. Recent projects have included a 30-station network and security cameras for a warehouse operator in Tacoma and installing access points, wifi and switching for a multi-location services company.
“Because of COVID, I’ve re-thought how I’m going to strategize my business,” Hansman said. “Some of my business in the future will be with work-at-home people who will be taking support calls. We kind of fit the need. For a big organization, we can provide infrastructure for their IT team and give them tools they need.”
Now the company serves clients with locations all over the country. If an onsite service call is needed, they partner with a local vendor at the other end. And they still serve for residential customers, too.
