Students serve as pages in Washington House of Representatives

Posted

Two local high school students recently had the opportunity to serve as pages in the Washington State House of Representatives.

Sponsored by State Rep. Victoria Hunt (D-Issaquah), Haydn Simpson and Katie Boyd participated in the program during last week’s legislative session.

Haydn Simpson, a student at North Thurston High School, is the child of John and Melanie Simpson of Lacey.

Katie Boyd, a student at St. Michael School, is the child of Jenni and Jered Boyd of Olympia.

As pages, the students performed a variety of duties to assist with the daily operations of the Washington Legislature.

Their responsibilities included presenting flags, delivering messages to lawmakers on the House floor, and distributing materials throughout the Capitol campus.

The pages also received civics instruction, were given the opportunity to draft bills, and participated in mock committee hearings.

The Washington State House of Representatives Page Program provides students with a hands-on experience in government, creating a venue for youths to learn more about the legislative process.
