A man accused of stealing more than $3,500 in electronics, jewelry and digital funds from a friend’s ex-girlfriend was arrested on May 26 following a two-week investigation by the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office.
The theft was first reported on May 14, when deputies responded to a residence on Yolanda Drive SW.
According to the victim, her ex-boyfriend had recently been moving out of their home and had brought a friend — later identified in a police report as Sean Adams — to help him.
She told investigators that she discovered several of her personal items were missing, including her cellphone, wallet and various belongings from her purse after falling asleep at home.
The victim stated, "(T)here were multiple transactions made from her Cash App account sending money to Sean’s (suspect) Cash App account without her knowledge and consent.”
She suspected Adams had overheard her phone passcode while she was speaking to her ex-boyfriend and used it to access her device.
The report states the suspect allegedly used the phone to send multiple unauthorized Cash App payments to an account in his own name, and that the victim showed the authorities the transactions made.
Additional transactions involving crypto currency totaling nearly $200 were also reported by the victim. The stolen property included a Moto G Stylus phone, valued jewelry and makeup, and her wallet containing credit cards and identification documents.
Investigators attempted to reach the suspect by phone and searched locations where he was reportedly staying, including a vehicle parked near a local Safeway. He was ultimately located and was arrested.
When questioned, the 36-year-old suspect denied the allegations and claimed he had no recent access to his Cash App account.
“Sean (suspect) said he has been to her property a couple times but never been inside her house and asserted that he did not take anything from the victim,” a TCSO deputy reported.
He also stated he did not have a phone, though authorities observed a phone inside his vehicle. He later said the device belonged to his brother.
Adams was booked into Thurston County Corrections Facility on charges of first-degree identity theft and second-degree theft.
