A man was taken into custody on Saturday, June 7, following an incident at a local grocery store involving alleged shoplifting and drug possession.
Thurston County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a call around 5 p.m. on June 7 from WinCo Foods on Martin Way East in Olympia regarding a man allegedly stealing merchandise.
According to store staff, the individual has been involved in a theft on Sept. 30, 2022, and has been trespassed in the store since that time.
When responding deputies arrived, they were directed to the live security footage that showed the suspect, later identified in a police report as Chandler Davis, moving through the store and appearing to tamper with packaged goods. Store personnel reported seeing him removing items after opening boxes and placing the opened boxes back on shelves.
Deputies waited until the suspect approached the self-checkout area and intervened before he exited the store. He was taken into custody without incident.
A search of the 32-year-old suspect revealed drug-related items.
“I located a broken burnt glass pipe and a broken burnt plastic tube with foil on it. I also located two small plastic bags containing a white crystal like substance. Based on my training and experience these items appeared to be drug paraphernalia and methamphetamine,” a TCSO deputy said in a report.
Officials said the materials were consistent with personal drug use.
Davis was transported to Thurston County Corrections Facility and booked for multiple charges, including second-degree burglary for reentering the store after being formally trespassed, third-degree theft, third-degree malicious mischief, unlawful possession of a controlled substance - synthetic narcotic, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
